Thomas Schmitt

Thomas Schmitt is a trained geographer with foci in Heritage Studies, interethnic relations and sustainability/geographies of energy. He obtained a doctoral degree from the Technical University of Munich in 2002 and the habilitation in geography from the University of Bonn in 2009/2010, on the basis of a monography on UNESCO’s World Heritage system. He conducted research on World Heritage governance, cultural landscapes and historic cities as heritage sites, and intangible heritage, with a focus on Central Europe and North Africa. Since 2020 he has been professor for Cultural Heritage at Heidelberg University and teaches within the MA program on Cultural Heritage and the Protection of Cultural Property at Heidelberg University. He is currently member of the expert panel for intangible cultural heritage of the German Commission for UNESCO.
