Admission Procedure

Online applications for the Master Programme will be available at the beginning of 2027.

Admission to the JMP requires applying to the School of Architecture (NTUA). Before submitting an application applicants must:

1. Check eligibility — Make sure to meet the programme’s entry requirements before applying.
2. Access the application portal — Applications are submitted online through the eApply portal on the programme’s website.
3. Create an account — Complete the online request form to set up your personal account.
4. Complete your application — Log in to the system and fill in all required fields in the application form.
5. Upload supporting documents — Upload all necessary documents in PDF format.

Eligibility

The programme is open to graduate students worldwide. More specifically, it is intended for architects, landscape architects and urban planners, archaeologists, historians, graduates in museology and cultural studies, and graduates from related fields. Applicants must hold a recognised academic degree awarded upon the successful completion of a graduate-level study programme. This degree must certify the full and formal completion of a first cycle or equivalent programme of study, as defined within the applicable national or international higher education framework.

Graduates of foreign higher education institutions must provide recognition of their degree. The recognition of their qualifications must take into account Greek and German legislation and the relevant competent authorities. In Greece, the recognition of foreign diplomas (degrees) is handled mainly by DOATAP — the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Centre (also known as the Greek NARIC). In Germany, when recognizing foreign qualifications, the recommendations of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz) as well as agreements within the framework of university partnerships must be taken into account. In cases of doubt, the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) is consulted.

Documents

The following documents must be submitted online by all applicants:

• Proof of nationality (passport) and proof of residence (official document).
• Original and translated copy of the previous university degree(s) and the transcript(s) of records.
• Curriculum vitae.
• Language certificate.
• Motivation letter (maximum 1 A4 page).
• Two letters of recommendation from academic referees.
• For architects and landscape architects: a portfolio of their previous significant work and thesis.
• For all other applicants: their thesis or other relevant work or research.

All information for applicants and the application forms will be published on the programme’s website (ah.arch.ntua.gr) at least two months before the application deadline.

Language

An English language certificate (see list below) must be submitted no later than the application deadline.

Key English Proficiency Requirements

• IELTS Academic: Overall band score of at least 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each section.
• TOEFL iBT: Overall score of at least 100, with a minimum of 21 in each section.
• Cambridge English: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
• Validity: Test results must normally be issued within the last two years.

Exemptions from the English Proficiency requirement:

• Native speakers from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, United States of America, Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia, or New Zealand.
• Applicants who have completed an English-taught Bachelor’s degree in a country where English is not the official language. In such cases, an official letter from the university of graduation confirming that English was the medium of instruction must be provided.

Selection Criteria / Assessment

The following criteria are taken into account in the selection process:

• the overall grade of the previous degree/s,
• the ranking of the degree grade in relation to the grades of other graduates in the same School/Department in the same academic year,
• any other postgraduate degrees related to the topic of the JMP,
• the candidate’s research, professional or technological activity,
• the grade in undergraduate modules related to the topic of the JMP,
• the grade and subject of the thesis, where this is required at the undergraduate level,
• the IT skills,
• the motivation letter,
• the portfolio for architects, landscape architects, and urban planners,
• previous research work,
• the letters of recommendation.

Evaluation Process

The evaluation of applications from candidates having submitted all required supporting documents by the deadline is conducted by a three-member Evaluation/Selection Committee composed of members of the Study Program’s Committee, one of whom is from the University of Heidelberg. Following the verification of the completeness of the submitted applications and supporting documents, a ranking list of candidates is compiled based on the following scoring system:

Maximum score: 100 points. The first 70 points are allocated as follows:

• Up to 10 points for previous academic qualifications (overall grades, thesis grade, ranking of the degree grade, additional technical specializations).
• Up to 10 points for professional/technical experience and IT skills.
• Up to 10 points for publications (preferably peer-reviewed), conference papers, or book chapters.
• Up to 40 points for the portfolio (for architects, landscape architects), previous thesis, or other relevant research activity.

For those candidates that have accumulated at least 35 of those 70 points, an interview will be conducted by members of the Evaluation/Selection Committee. The performance of that interview is weighed up to 30 points, which are then added to the previous score.

At the end of the process, a final ranking list of applicants is compiled.

Letters of recommendation and the motivation letter are scored as part of the interview.

Knowledge of the English language is not part of the scoring process. It is a prerequisite for submitting the application.

During the selection process, special attention will be given to ensuring equality and avoiding any form of discrimination. All applications will be evaluated solely on the basis of academic qualifications, skills, and potential, regardless of gender, ethnic or national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic.

Acceptance

All applicants will receive written notification of the Evaluation Committee’s decision. Applicants placed on the reserve list will also be informed accordingly.

The notification of acceptance for selected candidates will include the official letter of approval. It will specify the deadline by which students must complete their registration and submit all required documents. Students who fail to meet this deadline will be considered to have withdrawn, and their places will be offered to candidates from the reserve list according to their ranking. An additional deadline for finalizing the registration process will be established thereafter.

Appeal System

All candidates will have access to detailed information regarding the assessment and evaluation phases of their applications. Rejected candidates will have seven (7) days to submit an appeal before the final selection is confirmed.

Enrolment

The enrolment process will be carried out at both partner universities according to their rules and procedures.

Fees

A fee in the low three-digit euro range (approx. 200 euros) is charged for studying at UHD. The amount is due at the beginning of each semester upon re-registration or must be paid as part of matriculation.

International students from non-EU and non-EEA countries will pay tuition fees of one thousand five hundred (1500) euros per semester at NTUA; at UHD, tuition fees are paid according to the rules of the Landeshochschulgebührengesetz (this group of people currently pays one thousand five hundred (1500) euros per semester).

Mobility

Mobility of students is realised by stays at UHD and by the traineeship in Koumasa. It will be covered through the Erasmus+ mobility scheme. Mobility of faculty is achieved through a short-term relocation between universities. Certain professors from the NTUA may move to UHD for a short period during the second semester, and vice versa. In certain cases, invited academics offering seminars might relocate to the NTUA for in-person instruction.

Scholarships / Awards

NTUA shall award, from the resources of the JMP, three prizes upon completion of each intake to the JMP graduates with the highest graduation grades, in recognition of their academic achievement. In the event of a tie, the award shall be given to the student with the highest thesis grade.

Visa

Applicants from non-EEA (European Economic Area) countries must obtain a valid visa. If you are a citizen of a country outside the EEA and you have been accepted to the Joint Master Programme, you are required to obtain a Student Visa (National-D Category “D.1.1 Studies”) before entering Greece. Upon arrival, you must also apply for a “Residence Permit for Studies” to legally remain in Greece for the duration of your academic programme.

Before You Travel to Greece

1. Submitting a Student Visa (Type D) application

Before submitting your visa application, please ensure that:

• You have received the official Letter of Acceptance / Admission from the School of Architecture, NTUA.
• You are able to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition fees (where applicable), living expenses, and travel costs.
• You hold a valid passport with at least two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years and valid for the full duration of your intended stay.

2. Required Documents for the Student Visa (Type D)

You must apply for your visa at the Greek Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. Required documents may include (but are not limited to):

• Completed and signed Visa Application Form.
• Valid passport.
• Official Letter of Acceptance issued by the Greek institution.
• Evidence proving that you have adequate income to meet study and subsistence costs, amounting to at least four hundred (400) euros a month. The amount of sufficient income is proved by a deposit account, a bank transfer, or a scholarship.
• Proof of tuition fee payment.
• Passport-sized photographs.
• Medical certificate.
• Certificate of Criminal Record.
• Proof of health insurance valid in Greece and the EU.

You may not enter Greece with a tourist visa and then request to convert it into a student visa; you must obtain the proper visa before entering the country.

Processing time may vary, so students are strongly encouraged to begin the visa application process at least 2–3 months before the start of the programme (for specific details, please consult the Greek Embassy or Consulate in your home country).

Any document translation required must be completed by a certified translator or approved authority; only official translations are accepted.

After Your Arrival in Greece

You are required to apply for a Residence Permit for Studies. You will need to submit:

• A copy of your passport and student visa.
• Proof of enrollment at the host University.
• Proof of financial resources.
• Proof of health insurance.
• A local address in Greece.
• Official fee payment (where applicable).

Residence permits are typically issued for one academic year and may be renewed annually. In some cases, multi-year permits may be issued depending on the duration of the study programme.

Students holding a valid residence permit for studies may reside legally in Greece for the duration of their studies and travel freely within the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days within 180 days).

Important Notes

• Visa requirements may vary slightly depending on the applicant’s nationality and the Greek Consulate processing the application. Students are strongly advised to contact the relevant Greek Embassy or Consulate after receiving their acceptance letter to confirm required documents and deadlines.
• To prevent delays or visa refusal, please avoid applying late, submitting incomplete or missing documents, using uncertified or incorrect translations, or entering Greece on a tourist visa.
• Please read all communication from the local Greek embassy and your host institution carefully and keep copies of all submitted documents.
• Check whether additional requirements apply to your nationality.
• Ensure your passport remains valid for the full period of your studies (renew early if needed). Maintain valid documents and comply with immigration regulations throughout your studies.
